Chris Butler – Ings Circular, 1st August 2026

We will stop at Truckhaven for coffee on our northward journey.

I have changed some walk details from previous excursions here, hopefully to improve our enjoyment of the day.

We set off up the quiet lane and then head off onto a pleasant track which takes us through woods and pastures, with extensive views of the southern Lake District fells. We wander through Schoolknott Plantation and then follow the track through Pinethwaite.

Some parts are stony underfoot, but I’m certain you won’t need your crampons!!😂😂

We head for lunch by the side of a picturesque tarn at the foot of School Knott. The more energetic amongst us will head up School Knott, but this is an optional extension. It only takes 5 minutes, literally, to reach the top and climbs 125 feet. If it’s raining we’ll probably miss this out! The views from the top are amazing, as you can see from the video below.

After lunch, we head for Hagg End, no comment! Then it’s pleasant paths and lanes back to The Watermill at Ings for refreshments.

The total walk is under 6 miles and under 600 feet of climbing; less, if you miss out the extension. There are several gates and 2 stiles.

I hope you have an enjoyable day and the weather is kind.
