Chris Butler – Scout Scar recce, 9th May 2026

Published by admin on

We’ll make our usual coffee stop at Truckhaven on our journey North.

We start our walk on the Brigsteer Road above Kendal, which means we avoid a lot of the height of Scout Scar, making it an easier walk. We stroll over Heslington Barrows to reach a large cairn and from there we head northwards along Scout Scar to reach a panoramic viewpoint known as The Mushroom. This opens up extensive views of the Lake District fells and the Pennines. Be aware that some paths are on limestone and so good footwear is needed.

After leaving Scout Scar, we start our descent over Cunswick Scar, and then head east over pleasant fields, towards Kendal. We skirt the edges of the golf course and then keep descending, through Serpentine Woods, into Kendal for our end-of-walk refreshments.

The walk is around 6 miles, with some gentle ascents and a couple of stone stiles.
