Chris Butler – Kendal to Scout Scar recce

Published by admin on

We start our walk on the Brigsteer Road above Kendal, which means we avoid a lot of the height of Scout Scar, making it an easier walk. We stroll over Helsington Barrows to reach a large cairn, and from there we head northwards along Scout Scar to reach a panoramic viewpoint, known as The Mushroom. This opens up extensive views of the Lake District fells and the Pennines. Be aware that some paths are on limestone and so good footwear is needed.
After leaving Scout Scar we start our descent over Cunswick Scar, and then head east over pleasant fields, towards Kendal. We skirt the edges of the golf course and then keep descending, through Serpentine Woods, into Kendal.
We will have time for refreshments in Kendal before our return home. Let’s hope we have good weather, because the views are great, but probably not if it’s raining!! The walk is around 6 miles, with some gentle ascent, which we’ll take slowly.
