Saturday 28th of September Walk – Tewitfield, 6.5 Miles
Starting at the Longlands hotel, where we will also be having our morning break, we set off along the canal, where we pass by weirs, and where we saw a few Herons when we recced the walk. We pass by an old lock gate which was one of 8 raising Lancaster canal 75 feet in only half a mile, and the only gates on the 57 mile of Lancaster canal between Preston and Kendal. We also pass by the old Quaker Burial Ground.
We then head towards Cinderbarrow picnic area for lunch. There are a couple of picnic tables and a few benches along with a miniature railway, but I didn’t see any toilets.
Then after lunch it’s on through the outskirts of Cringlebarrow woods towards Yealand Conyers. Passing the Quakers Yealand Meeting House and the old Police Station we then walk down a country road. We need to cross the A6 on the way out and back in so be careful. We then walk by a farmer’s field, go under the M6, and walk back along the canal to Longlands Hotel for refreshments.
So we have flat walking by the side of the canal, but a farmer’s field that had just been spread with muck when we did the walk. A few country roads, and a bit of uphill woodland, but nothing that we can’t manage. I have altered the route a little as the first part was a bit overgrown and full of tiny little mice. Plenty of lovely country smells, and some nice views.

The cost is £15 as stated in the programme (https://www.fyldenaturalists.co.uk/saturday-walks-2024-2025/) and the pickup point information and maps is here (https://www.fyldenaturalists.co.uk/pick-up-information/).
Hope that helps,
Simon
