Skipton to Embsay Reservoir
Distance: 9.75 km (approx. 6.1 miles)
Lunch Break: Embsay Reservoir
Grade: Moderate
Start/End Point: Skipton
Terrain: Roadside footpath, fields, stiles, steps (not stone), country lanes

This circular walk begins in the market town of Skipton, taking us through a scenic blend of countryside paths and quiet lanes to the peaceful Embsay Reservoir. I have travelled through Skipton many times before and never been to the reservoir, the first time we did a recce I was stunned at the views from here, after a few more the pleasure is wearing thin, so I hope as this may be a first for some of you, you enjoy it as much as I did ..However on saying that there are still plenty of walks I would like to do around here so another visit for us staying at the farm house B&B would be good, not hinting Mick but a gentle nudge may be in order.

Due to issues with access, we will follow a footpath alongside the road instead of the original woodland route I had planned. The walk continues through open fields, where we will cross a couple of stiles and climb a short set of steps, after which we’ll pause for a short break at the 1665 Manor House and Swan Cottage – both Grade II listed buildings – where we can rest beside the lovely beck that runs past them.

From there, we continue along quiet country lanes, passing some local paddocks where you might spot llamas along the way.

At Embsay Reservoir, we will enjoy a lunch break. Benches are available around the reservoir, offering scenic spots to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. Hope it’s not raining and you can enjoy it.

After lunch, we will complete a loop of the reservoir before retracing our route back to Skipton, where refreshments will be available for those who wish

Important Information:

  • No toilets are available along the route. Please ensure you use facilities in Skipton before we set off.
  • Very little cover—come prepared for open exposure to sun or rain.
  • Refreshments: Cafés and pubs are available in Skipton after the walk.

Skipton is a great alternative for those not joining the walk. Saturday is market day, and the town also offers:

  • The impressive Skipton Castle
  • Scenic Leeds–Liverpool Canal walks and the woodland walk, which I found hard going.
  • Numerous shops and cafés
